search engine optimization – what the heck is it?

Search engine optimization, or SEO, is one of these terms that seems to be everywhere these days. It is also one of these terms that most of us say, “What the heck is that?” Knowing a little bit about proper SEO can go a long way in helping people find your band online. Make sure you pop up on top of the list when people use search engines like google, bing, or yahoo to look up your band.

SEO tips…

Register your domain at search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo. Each one has a process for submitting your website. This is free to do, and a great first step to take.

Have other websites link to your website. Place your web address on as many other websites as you can. Put a link to your website on your accounts for Facebook, twitter, Reverb Nation, Instragram, etc. Any other website linking back to your website also helps in ranking. Be sure to have people provide a link to your website when they are referencing your band.

Make sure your website has good valid content. This is good practice anyway, but search engines want to rate “good” websites higher than “bad” ones. If your website is about your band, but also about 1970s sitcoms then it might not do as well. Focus your content, and make it valid to your band.

Don’t fall for the SEO scammers that say they can give you a #1 rank for a certain price. Odds are this is not true. They might get results, but in a way that isn’t favorable to sites like Google. In fact, some practices to cheat the system can get you booted from Google all together. That would be your online death essentially.

META tags can help as well.

These tags are HTML code embedded in your website to help search engines determine what your website is about. These can be keywords like: a genre, a location, names of band members, song names, or whatever you feel describes your music/band. These are less critical now, but still worth doing. Some search engines value these tags more than others. Put them in to make sure your bases are covered.
