5 helpful podcasts for the indie musician

I love learning! One of the best ways that I learn is by listening to podcasts. I can listen to them while I do others things, so I know I can make the best use of my time. I wanted to share with you 5 music business podcasts that I find very useful.

Music Marketing Manifesto

John Oszajca is probably best known for his Music Marketing Manifesto program. He is also an alt-country artist that was signed to a few major labels before deciding to do it on his own. John shares some of his techniques on how indie musicians can be successful without the need for a major label. He brings in guests from time to time to talk about how they succeed as an indie musician as well.

Music Money and Life

Aaron Davison is an indie musician that focuses mainly on music licensing. He has made a living from his music and has found that sync licensing works well for him. In his podcast, he goes over the things he has learned over the years. Aaron has some interviews with top industry people like producers, music supervisors, etc. This is a great resource if you are interested in getting into sync licensing (which you should.)

Music Biz 101 and More

This podcast is new to me actually. I only recently found it while researching some topics. There are lots of episodes where they interview some of the industries’ experts. Hearing from the experts is a great way to learn some secrets that will help you jump ahead in your journey toward success.

DIY musician

CDBaby is one of those companies that really is a true friend to indie musicians. I remember ordering CD by a local band from them back before most bands at any level were selling CDs online. So it comes as no surprise that they would put together a podcast to help the indie musician thrive in today’s world.

Song Exploder

Song Exploder is not necessarily about the business side of things, but it is about the craft of making songs. The website describes the podcast as “a podcast where musicians take apart their songs, and piece by piece, tell the story of how they were made.” You get a lot of insight into how some of the best songwriters create a song from start to finish. I really find it interesting to see how different writers write, and what their process is. You might learn a few things about what you need to do in order to write better songs.
